Composite Cedar Shake Siding Stands Up to Winnipeg Weather

Winter weather in Winnipeg can get really brutal. The Canadian city experiences an average of -4 degrees F. with about 44 inches of snow each year. Therefore, when Harris Builders selects building products for their home exteriors, they make certain the products will hold up to tough winter conditions. That’s one reason why they recently used DaVinci Hand-Split Shake Siding on a custom home.

“From summer to winter our temperatures can fluctuate from 95 degrees down to -31 degrees,” says Michael Golden, a local land developer and client of Harris Builders. “Manitoba weather conditions mean we need products that can stand up to extremes.

“After seeing the composite shake siding from DaVinci at the International Builders’ Show, we decided to try it on our custom home. Now that we’ve experienced its quality and durability first hand, we are planning to add DaVinci products to our list of approved architectural guidelines for all of our new homes, townhomes and apartment projects within our subdivisions.”

This custom home, built by Harris Builders, features the DaVinci composite cedar shake siding in an Aged Cedar color in the gable areas.

“This home exterior is beautiful and durable,” says Tanner Twerdun, project manager with Harris Builders out of Winnipeg. “We anticipate the products will stand up against Mother Nature in our sometimes very harsh environment.”

DaVinci Hand-Split Shake Siding products have an authentic cedar shake look. They come in eight unique colors. Each composite shake resists impact, fire, mold and algae. In addition, they resist insects, salt air and high winds. Above all, they will not curl, cup or split like real cedar shakes.

Backed by a Lifetime Limited Material Warranty, each tile in the siding line is 18-inches tall. The composite shake shingles are 5/8-inch thick. They come in eight- or 10-inch widths. The 10-inch wide pieces have a simulated keyway. This gives the multi-width appearance of four- and six-inch width shakes placed together.

DaVinci Hand-Split Shake Siding is made of virgin resins, UV and thermal stabilizers plus a highly-specialized fire retardant. The shake shingles resist expansion and contraction that can happen with fluctuating weather conditions and temperatures.

The maintenance-free composite shake siding is made with color throughout each piece. It never requires painting. The tiles are recyclable. They serve as an environmentally friendly alternative to real wood shakes and plastic siding.
