Roofing 101 – Roof Components
Whether you are looking to reroof an existing home or building or to roof a new home or building, you might be interested in what all goes into an actual roof.
Believe it or not, there is more to it than just the shingles that you buy from us – a lot more to it, in fact.
In addition to our shingles, there is also decking, flashing, underlayment, nails and potentially snowguards.
Below is an image from our DaVinci Slate Installation Guide to help you visualize the multiple layers. As you can see in the photo, the decking is the very first thing that it laid, then the metal flashings are added, followed by the self-adhered membrane and 30 lb felt. Then you are finally ready to tile. The first course of tiles is always the starter course that goes along the eave right above the Style D or F drip edge. Then the field tiles (the majority of the tiles are field tiles) can be added. The field tiles are then topped off with hip or ridge tiles.
Of course, there are more components that go into valleys, dormers and more and sometimes these layers vary depending on where you live in the country.
